Sitting in mum's lap drinking milkBy mid summer I was really starting to grow and put on weight. My shoulders and legs became thicker, and I became much stronger. I was also being weaned off my milk and encouraged to eat copious amounts of native grasses that would be gathered by my foster parents and planted in my enclosure.

On the prowlDigging became a favourite pastime during the night. Of a morning when my foster mother came to visit and feed me, she would have to fill in all the holes that I had dug during the night. Various native grasses were planted in my enclosure and encouraged to grow. But they were really nice to eat and I found that I really enjoyed munching on them - they struggled to take root and grow once I'd discovered how good they tasted...

I also had a tarpaulin and some cover setup over my burrow. Whilst I normally wouldn't have this in the bush, I also wouldn't be in an enclosure either and have the same 'poor' drainage problems at times as I could move on to another burrow if it flooded or wasn't to my liking. It does the job, and I remain high and dry in my burrow when it rains now. It's also nice and shady during summer.

Eating native grassMy foster parents knew that it was soon time to release me. I had grown to about 16kgs (35lbs) and they started to look around for a place where they could release me. Of course, they couldn't just take me to the bush and leave me there. I might not have sufficient skills to cope with bush life, or during my release back into the bush, I might get sick and require some assistance.
