Russell The Wombat's Burrow

A message from Russell...
On this page you'll find some sounds, some movie clips, some wallpaper images and a few wombat screen savers. (Note - all mp3s, movie clips, wallpapers and screen savers are subject to copyright!)

Wombat Sounds

Russell 'calling to mum'... (approx. 370Kb - MP3 file)

This is the typical noise a common wombat makes when it is 'calling' to its mother. The banging noise you can hear in the clip are my claws on the corrugated iron sheeting of my enclosure. My foster parents stopped recording quickly as they could see that I was getting stressed and needed some reassurance. The magpie calls in the clip are gratis from the nearby aviary (I have such noisy neighbours!).

You'll need an MP3 player (such as Windows Media Player™ or Winamp™) to play this file. Right click on the above file and save to a directory on your PC.

You can also listen to one of my other foster brothers, Sherman, calling as well:
Sherman 'calling to mum'... (approx. 480Kb - MP3 file)

The video for Sherman's calling can be found in the Movie Clips section.

Wombat Movies

You'll need a movie player to play these clips of me (all clips are .mpg format, except for one of my foster sister, 'Wombles' which is in .wmv format).Windows™ Media Player or any other player should be able to do the job. Right click on the file you wish to play and save to a directory on your PC.

We've removed the sound on some video clips to cut down on the size of the file and adjusted the video quality as well (it's OK, but not brilliant - we really wanted to save space so that we can have a few clips, so the resolution has been cut). It's enough to give you a good look at me though. The latest clips are full sound and quality, but they are quite large.

Russell movie 1
Russell video clip 1 (approx. 1.3Mb)
This video clip was taken back in September 2000. I was still very tiny, and around 3 or 4kg...
Russell movie 2
Russell video clip 2 (approx. 610Kb)
This video clip shows me walking around the backyard and showing you what an inquisitive animal I can be...
Russell movie 3
Russell video clip 3 (approx. 950Kb)
This video clip shows how quickly I can move when 'playing' with my foster mum. Note that she has strong gloves on, as although we're just playing, I still can bite pretty hard...
Russell movie 4
Russell video clip 4 (approx. 1.1Mb)
This video clip shows me eating some native grass. Every afternoon my foster parents would go out and dig up 3 or 4 big clumps of grass for me to feed on. Mind you, I also enjoyed the occasional carrot and piece of corn as a treat too.
Abigail's burrow movie
Abigail's burrow video clip (approx. 605Kb)
This video clip shows what it's like down my foster sister's (Abigail's) burrow. The video camera was set to infrared filming mode (to film in the dark) which explains why the film colour is green/grey. Watch Abigail have a look at the camera and then have a good sniff at it before coming out of her burrow. This was tricky for my foster dad to film as he couldn't see what he was filming as he stuck his arm down Abigail's burrow with the camera.
Wombles and the beer fridge movie
Wombles and the beer fridge (approx. 660Kb)
This video clip shows one of my foster sisters (Wombles) and how she easily opens up the spare fridge. Who said that us wombats weren't smart enough to open a fridge and help ourselves to something to eat?
Sherman calling movie
Sherman calling (approx. 5.2Mb mirror site)
This video clip is in a higher resolution and has sound. It shows one of my foster brothers, Sherman, coming up out of his burrow and calling for attention. Listen to the noise that he makes (this clip is well worth the download to see and hear the noise that a wombat makes).
Harriet being aggressive
Harriet (approx 10Mb mirror site)
This video clip has sound and shows one of my foster sisters, Harriet in an aggressive mood. The noise that she is making and the baring of teeth is telling the whole world that she is a big, bad wombat and that we are in her territory. She is defending this and telling us to "Back off!" A wombat in a mood such as this is likely to attack and should be taken very seriously.
Rumbles being a very aggressive wombat
Rumbles (approx 8Mb - mirror site)
This video clip also has sound and shows one of my foster brothers, Rumbles in a very aggressive mood (he is a lot crankier than the clip of Harriet above). The noise that he is making, the baring of teeth and advancing towards the camera in this fashion means that he will attack whoever he feels threatened by. He is being very territorial in this clip.
Darcy (approx 3Mb)
Darcy playing with a teddy bear. When we first placed Darcy into an outside enclosure we wanted to give her something with our smell on it to make her feel comfortable. A cloth teddy bear was selected. As you can see from the clip, Darcy really loves her teddy to pieces...
