This page contains a number of photographs in the Canberra and surrounding areas of wombat burrows.
Photos taken in the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve
These first photographs were taken in the Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve area, a short drive from Canberra city and within the Australian Capital Territory. (More information can be found here on Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve).
Just to give you an indication of the size of a wombat burrow entrance, my foster mother is next to one (left). This photo was taken in early 1999. Note the tree roots helping support the roof of this burrow entrance. Another exit/entrance was found nearby (right) on an incline. Click on an image to enlarge...
This is an extraordinary photo as approximately 15 months later, my foster mum visited the same burrow site with her mother to show her, and lo and behold, the occupant of the burrow appeared!!! Such a wonderful coincidence for this to occur. This is another common wombat (like me) and taken during early Winter, late in the day (which explains why he/she is outside as we're nocturnal animals)
Photos taken in Uriarra Crossing
Uriarra Crossing is another nature reserve within the Australian Capital Territory that is beside the Molonglo river and popular for families that wish to swim in the river and have a nearby BBQ. The site is very picturesque and home to a number of wombats (as seen by their burrows). Some, however, appear not to have been used in a while as there weren't too many wombat scats (poo) around.
